  • Central Broadway Planning Program
Central Broadway – located generally between Main and Arbutus Streets (see map) – is one of Vancouver’s most important streets. Formerly called Ninth Avenue, Broadway was renamed in 1909 to reflect its emerging prominence in Vancouver. In many ways Broadway has lived up to the hopes of 1909.
Central Broadway is now the second largest office district in the province (second only to Downtown Vancouver). It is home to a number of vibrant and diverse retail districts including Main Street and South Granville. Also, it is a significant east-west connector for all modes of transportation, and may be the location for future rapid transit .
To ensure Central Broadway remains competitive as an employment district, it is important to provide enough job space capacity to meet future demand. Central Broadway’s future growth, both in jobs and housing, provides opportunities to position the city’s economy for the coming decades, to align land use and transportation planning and to create complete communities.
The last land use planning study in Central Broadway was completed in 1976. Since then, the area has changed dramatically from an auto-oriented commercial strip into a well-traveled, mixed-use high street. Recognizing the need to keep Central Broadway policy up to date, City Council has asked staff to review a number of policies in the area. Starting in 2010, Planning staff are undertaking the Central Broadway Planning Program.
